Alice Orrell

I have 25 years of experience in the power industry, from engineering design of natural-gas combined cycle power plants to developing robust, financial pro forma models to researching distributed energy technologies. I have worked with power project developers, non-profits, consulting firms, national and international associations, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Defense. I left my position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in September 2023 to explore new opportunities.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS & AWARDS

I have been an invited speaker at many conferences and meetings including those of the Society of Women Engineers, American Wind Energy Association, Distributed Wind Energy Association, Windustry, Women of Wisdom Tri-Cities, and March for our Lives Tri-Cities. I was honored to receive the 2018 Community Wind & Sustainable Energy Distinguished Service Award presented by a peer group of community wind and sustainable energy colleagues and the non-profit Windustry.

EDUCATION

I received my Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from University of Vermont and my Master of Business Administration from University of Washington. I am a licensed Professional Engineer in Washington state.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

I regularly do outreach events to teach students about wind energy through programs such as Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. With PNNL, I participated in the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project and was featured in a video explaining how I approached working with communities.

SPEAKER SERIES

During the pandemic, I produced Our Engineering Journeys, a speakers series featuring women engineers doing amazing things, and converted the interview with Eileen Vélez Vega, Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Public Works for Puerto Rico, into a feature article for the Society of Women Engineer’s magazine.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

I am a former SWE Region J Governor (July 2, 2012 – June 30, 2014) and an Eastern Washington Section member.
